Stonewalls that retain vestiges of the Gusuku period and a spectacular view are the attraction of the "Ruins of Izena Castle.
The ruins of Izena Castle, located in the southeast of Izena Island, was built by the great lord Samegawa during the Gusuku period (11th to 14th centuries). He was the grandfather of Sho Hashi, the first Sho dynasty king, and this castle was said to be impregnable as a natural fortress. From the ruins of the castle at an elevation of 70 meters, the view of the entire island and the blue sea is truly spectacular. The stonewalls, stone gate, and stone steps that remain today tell the story of the castle's prosperity in those days. At the foot of the castle is the Izenatama Palace, where you can enjoy both history and nature at the same time.
