A two-day and one-night trip to the historical sites associated with King Shoen and to experience the history and culture of Izena Island.

DAY 1

Rent a car and check in at the inn (1 minute walk from the ferry)

Located in the terminal premises, next to the car rental shop, so very convenient.

Lunch time at the island cafeteria

Lunch time at the island cafeteria

Rest House Kamiyama, a lunch shop located in the center of the island *Closed on Mondays (about 3 minutes by car from the terminal) Mozuku soba noodles filled with mozuku seaweed from Izena Island are popular.

Shouen-ou Garden (tea ceremony)

Shoen-oh Oniwa (about 3 minutes by car from Rest House Kamiyama)

This bronze statue was built to commemorate the 580th anniversary of the birth of King Shoen. The direction it points is... let's see it there! There is a parking lot, so you can park there and walk to the next Mihosojo.

The birthplace of King Shoen, the starting point of the history of Izena Island. The umbilical cord is buried at the site of the former residence.

Phantom rice field "Sakata" (Sakata)

Phantom rice field "Sakata" (Sakata) *5 minutes by car from Oniwa Park

This is the actual rice field that was cultivated by the later King Shoen, "Machigani". 600 years have passed, but the water has never run dry in this fantastic rice field. You can actually see the water pooling in the field. The monument is inscribed with songs left by maidens all over the island who were thinking of him at that time. *The entrance is difficult to find. Enter from the crossroads of sugar cane fields and go toward "o" to find it. Please note that the sign faces the opposite direction. It is possible to enter by car, but the vehicle may be damaged as it passes through a farm road.

Tongsukbet Park "King Shaoyuan's equestrian statue" (Japanese only)

Tongsuijeongsil Park "Statue of King Shoen's Horseman" (10 min. by car from Gyakuden)

This bronze statue of King Sho En as a young boy was built to commemorate the 600th anniversary of his birth. It is based on the story of how he rode his horse along this road to visit his girlfriend in Seori-kaku. Public restrooms are available for visitors to take a restroom break.

We took a break to buy drinks at a well-stocked local supermarket.

Meikari Family Residence (10 minutes by car from Sakata)

An important cultural property that preserves the lifestyle of the senior samurai of the Ryukyu Kingdom period.

Gitarra Lookout

Gitarra Lookout

One of the most beautiful spots on Izena Island. It commands a panoramic view of the coast, which has been selected as one of the 100 best beaches in Japan.

Dragon God Cave

Dragon God Cave

The connection to the second Shoji is unknown. It must be a new place, and the islanders do not have any information about it, but there is no doubt that it is a very sacred place. Going behind the torii gate, there is a cave that is said to be a power spot for fertility.

There are two royal mausoleums built by the third king, "King Sho Shin," son of King Sho En, and they are the Tamaryo Palace in Izena and the Tamaryo Tomb in Shuri. You can see the actual tomb of one of them, the Tamagoden of Izena!

Have a leisurely breakfast at the inn and check out.

The Izena Village Fureai Folk Museum exhibits historical cultural assets from the shell mound period to the Ryukyu Kingdom period and up to the present day. Many of the items are very valuable and their value is a treasure to those in the know.
